The answer to that question may not be as simple as it may seem. Recently, RootMetrics did a massive study with the different wireless carriers operating in the United States. The study measures coverage and data, SMS and voice quality.
Keep in mind that the mobile network industry is very competitive and who’s on top may be easily toppled in just a matter of months or years.
As of now, according to RootMetric’s study, Verizon sits on the top when it comes to overall quality and coverage in 35 states. For the other states, Verizon is tied for first place with its rival AT&T.
This means that when it comes to overall performance, quality and coverage, it’s either Verizon is sitting on top or is tied with a competitor.
Keep in mind that even though Verizon proves to have the widest and functional coverage, there are still gaps within its network. If network coverage is your main concern, it’s best that you personally visit the places that needs to have good coverage and personally check the quality of coverage. You can either ask your friends or family in the area about the coverage or you can pull out your mobile phone and test it yourself. 
Network coverage is an important factor when it comes to choosing a mobile carrier in the United States. As of now, according to RootMetrics, Verizon is the king when it comes to coverage and quality performance in the United States. However, this may change in a couple of months or years as the mobile network industry is fiercely competitive, so keep your ears on the ground.
